What to ask a dog trainer

A short conversation can tell you more than a long list of promises.

Describe your goal first.

Tell the trainer what your dog does, where it happens and what you would like to change. Ask whether they work with that issue and how they decide which program fits.

Ask how training happens.

Ask what the trainer does when a dog responds correctly and when the dog struggles. Discuss equipment, handling, written plans and your role between sessions. Ask to see an example class or session where possible.

Read the actual credential.

A training-school certificate, professional membership and independently assessed certification are different things. Check any named credential with its issuing body and confirm who will work with your dog.
